Updated: Jun 7, 2019

Over the past few years, I have been involved in holding interviews for top financial positions at a various charities. A common thing I have noticed is despite the attractive CV and all the necessary qualifications and experiences, the lack of in-depth knowledge in regards to specific charity accounts is mind-blowing!

So I have decided to share with you a few questions you could ask which will make you look and seem the part even if you have no clue whatsoever about the firm...

  1. What is the purpose of bank reconciliation?

  2. What would you do if staff do not submit their expense claims on time?

  3. How would you ensure that the bookkeeping transactions have been entered correctly?

  4. What is the effect of your bookkeeping if you deleted purchase invoice after the accounts for the end of the month have been finalised?

  5. What is the difference between cash accounting and accruals accounting?

  6. What is the effect if the opening balances from the previous year have not been entered in your bookkeeping software?

  7. Why should you have a month end close down?

  8. What do you know about Gift Aid?

  9. What bookkeeping reports would you give to the finance manager at the end of each month?

  10. What is the purpose of an organisations budget and cash flow
