Why I created a song about accounting

Most accountants create a logo, a website, or a brochure.

I decided to create a song.

That might sound unusual, but then again, my journey through the accounting profession has never been quite ordinary.

For more than 30 years, I have worked in finance, bookkeeping, accounting, training, and consultancy. During that time, I have supported charities, small businesses, trustees, finance teams, and non-finance managers. I have balanced countless spreadsheets, prepared budgets, trained hundreds of people, and helped organisations understand their finances.

Yet when I think about what has brought me the most satisfaction, it has never been the numbers themselves.

It has always been the people behind the numbers.

Finding Joy in Finance

Many people are surprised when I say that accounting brings me joy.

For some people, finance is associated with stress, confusion, deadlines, and fear. I've met many individuals who feel overwhelmed by budgets, management accounts, cashflow forecasts, and financial reports.

But I see something different.

I see finance as a tool that helps people achieve their goals.

I've seen the relief on a trustee's face when they finally understand a set of accounts.

I've watched charity managers gain confidence as they learn how to use financial information to make better decisions.

I've seen small business owners move from feeling anxious about their finances to feeling empowered and in control.

Those moments bring me joy.

More than just numbers

Throughout my career, I have come to realise that accounting is not simply about numbers.

It's about confidence.

It's about clarity.

It's about helping people make informed decisions.

It's about supporting organisations that are making a positive difference in the world.

Whether I am delivering a finance training session, mentoring a new accountant, helping a charity improve its financial systems, or speaking at an event, my goal is always the same: to help people feel more confident and less fearful about finance.

The birth of The Joyful Accountant

Recently, I decided to bring together two parts of my world.

The first is my lifelong passion for accounting and training.

The second is my passion for wellbeing, confidence building, laughter, and helping people find joy.

That is how The Joyful Accountant™ was born.

As I reflected on what this new brand means, I realised it needed something memorable, something that would make people smile and start a conversation.

So I created a song.

The song includes the words:

"Where spreadsheets meet smiles,Let's stay for a while,Turning financial fear into confidence and cheer."

Those lyrics perfectly capture my mission.

I want people to know that finance does not have to be frightening.

Learning about money, budgets, and accounts can actually feel empowering.

And yes—it can even be enjoyable.

Why this matters

The world needs good accountants.

But it also needs accountants who communicate well, build confidence, and support people with kindness and understanding.

I believe that finance professionals have the opportunity to do much more than produce reports.

We can educate.

We can encourage.

We can empower.

We can help people make better decisions for themselves, their organisations, and their communities.

That is what I have tried to do throughout my career, and it is what I hope to continue doing through The Joyful Accountant.

Looking ahead

As I continue this journey, I will be sharing finance tips, training, mentoring, podcasts, videos, and resources designed to help people feel more confident about finance.

My hope is simple.

That people will begin to see accounting not as something to fear, but as something that can help them achieve their goals.

And if I can make people smile along the way, then that's even better.

After more than 30 years in the profession, I still believe accounting can change lives.

Perhaps that's why I still love what I do.
